Due to its natural values, historical and cultural significance, Durmitor was declared a national park in 1952. Due to the richness of original and unique nature, ambient and cultural values of Durmitor and the river Tara, Durmitor National Park has been inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List since 1980, along with a part of the Tara canyon. Durmitor is in many ways the most impressive mountain in the Dinarides. It is a vast mountainous area between the deep canyons of Tara, Piva, and Komarnica and the mountains of Sinjajevina. Due to its geographical position, Durmitor represented a favorable area for the development of glacial landforms, while the glaciation of Durmitor has left well-preserved traces to this day, namely numerous mountain lakes, which are among the most beautiful hydrological phenomena and forms in Montenegro.
