Lovćen National Park

Description

Lovcen is a coastal mountain, in the south of the coastal chain of high mountains of the Dinaric system and immediately along the coast it rises sharply to its highest peaks. Highest peak is Stirovnik, which is 1749 m high. Lovcen National Park was declared a protected area in 1952. It covers the central and highest part of the Lovcen massif, with an area of 6,220 ha. The rich and diverse cultural and historical heritage is of significant value in the area of the Park and its immediate surroundings. NP Lovcen, like all national parks in Montenegro, is a member of the Association of Dinaric Arc Parks, whose main mission is to preserve biodiversity and natural phenomena of the network of protected areas in the Dinarides region, promote the brand “Dinaric Parks – Undiscovered World”, sustainable regional development and quality life in the region. The Lovcen serpentines stand out in terms of architecture and construction. The old road from Kotor stretches along Lovcen to Njegus, a picturesque mountain village, where the birthplaces of Petar II Petrovic Njegos, a Montenegrin bishop, poet and philosopher from the 19th century, are located. The monumental monument to the Lovcen National Park is Njegos’ mausoleum, erected on Jezerski top.
