Biogradska Gora National Park

Description

Biogradska gora National Park with Bjelasica Mountain is a unique geomorphological unit in the central part of Montenegro. A large number of plant and animal species, as well as fungal species, are protected in the park area. Of particular value are deciduous forest ecosystems, rainforest ecosystems, aquatic and highland ecosystems. Five glacial lakes are also a natural rarity, among which Lake Biogradsko stands out for its size and beauty, giving this area a unique beauty. The Park itself, within the chain of high Dinara mountains, due to the specific geographical position is well connected to NP Durmitor, parts of NP Prokletije, as well as with the new Regional Park Komovi. The Tara River Basin, which enjoys UNESCO protection under the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program since 1977 and covers the area of seven municipalities, including Kolasin. The Tara River Basin Biosphere Reserve covers an area of 1820 km2 and the Biogradska Gora National Park is included in this large biosphere reserve.
